My teacher Bob told me : do something good on wikipedia, write an article. I was willing to do it well, it's a good this to do when you are quite a geek like me.

But I wanted to do something original and I choose to write about "Captain Obvious" my obsession of the moment.

I explainded who he is. My inspiration was this article on Nioutaiknologie : à la decouverte de captain obvious.

WORKING ON THE ARTICLE, THIS IS JUST A BEGINNING

You do not exist and persist on the Internet without a few rules, a few principles guiding you through the dense jungle of the Internet and showing you the way to success.

I - Be present.

If we can't hear you every day, if we can't look at what you're doing, you won't last.

II - Create some content.

My second rule is very easy to understand, we cannot see what is not done ! You have to propose everyday a new discovery, a new analysis a new way to use existing tools.

III - Share

Once you've created your content, you've got to share it, if you don't, you don't exist. There are many, many ways to do it. I'm gonna explain you mine. Build a intelligent Netvibes, gathering the sites you prefer, it will be easier to surf. Subscribe to various sharing site

s, community sites, bookmarking, Digg like, blogging. And never forget to look for new concepts. Then, you are ready.

IV - Be interesting

Maybe the most difficult part.

V - Learn the language.

You have to learn the jargon. "OMG Noob ur CSS sucks." Speak the HTML, learn about pedobear and captain obvious, and never be afraid, they are from the Internet.

VI - It keeps changing, you cannot fight the tide.

You have to adapt your habits, take nothing for granted.

VII - Build a network.
On the Internet, as in life, you won't survive without good friends, it is one of the principle of the Internet, you have to be connected with people. Loneliness is vain.

VIII - Be a multi tasker.

You have many tools that permit you to do many things at one time, use them. don't waste ours on Facebook.

IX - All the glory to hypnotoad.

X - Never forget, you're not digitalised.

I really think that spending all you're life in front of your computer will kill you !

I would choose the Que, designed by Plastic Logic. I think that it is currently the best.

It has a big screen and it's important in order to read comfortably. (8.5*11 inches)

It is very thin and very light which is essential to carry it easily.

Finally it has a long lasting battery and could be used wireless.

MY NEW BABEL TOWER

Everything was great, everyone in the world was about to speak English. And then came the Internet. We tried to reach the deep sky of the infinite network and the Web God, the all mighty spider punished us. New languages appeared and every one was lost. Everyone except the new priests, prophets of the new Dogma, they were called "THE GEEKS", able to build websites out of those weird languages. Here is a good presentation.

Maybe I could make a list of these languages, A-0, FORTRAN, ALGOL 58, LISP, COBOL, CPL, BASIC, BCPL, LOGO, B, Pascal, prolog, awk, Ada, C++, Paradox, Hyper talk, OBERON, Apple script, Java, PHP, Anubis... but sorry, I forgot many of THEM.

You know what to do now, learn ! But just as other languages, some are more used than the others. So, maybe you can start with PHP, Java, Html and flash !

Also called Nigerian SCAM, the 4-1-9 SCAM is a widespread fraud on the Internet. "Criminals deceive victims into the payment a a fee by persuading them that they will receive a very large benefit in return".

The sent e-mails are often absolutely incredible, but it seems that money makes us belive in anything. I found a wonderfull example, enjoy !

If you answer, they ask for money in order to help them. They play on feelings, explaining the desesperate situation in their country (Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone mainly). And once your bank accound has been sucked dry or you start making threats, you'll never hear from them again.

419 SCAM takes several forms, fake lotteries, fake donations, everything that involves amazing amounts of money.

And SCAM is efficient : "we have confirmed losses of $100 millions just in the United states, in the last 15 months" declared James Caldwell, an American Agent... in 1997 ! The Internet is quite a huge place. Its means two things. First of all it is really easy to get lost and to waste hours and hours wandering from a website to another, doing absolutely nothing. But that point of view is quite pessimistic, if you are lost, get a map or a friend.

I want to talk about possibilities, and I think we are still discovering new possibilities and still exploring our own creation. A few years ago, people were only able to check the weather and a mail was science-fiction. Today we spent a lot of time on the Internet and the figures are growing fast. We buy, we laught, we play, we work, in fact, some of us have 2 parallel lives, online and IRL. And there is an analogy between the two, e-places and real places have the same name the same way of working. And when an artist tries to illustrate this concept, it does that :

Virtual world doesn't mean peaceful world, of course you won't die on the Internet, but you'll have to conquer your fame and your influence everyday. You have now billions of rivals willing to do almost what you are actually doing, and among them their are certainly a few who are doing it better. In this new war, all is about strategy and smartness.

Lets take the example of Twitter. It is an incredibly powerfull tool, even if you are sceptical, you'll have to agree with that. It's written here, here and here !

The Internet is a land of contradictions. And one of the most striking is the opposition between exhibitionism and privacy. On Facebook, we see a lot of groups defending privacy and personnal data. And on the other side, people are posting more and more pictures of their alcohol performances...

Here is the fact, we are like drug addicts, begging to be saved from ourselves. We can use many metaphors, but a short video may be a better argument.
